Mike Summers - June 2009:
Each summer I would take a group of 8th grade students to Washington, DC and the Williamsburg area. This is the website for the airport:
http://www.flyphf.com/content/
. Here's a website for Newport News:
http://scouttraveltips.wikispaces.com/Newport+News%2C+VA
. If you want a good beer check out St. George Brewing Company. Not much food, but good beer. Here's the website for the St George Brewing Company:
http://www.stgeorgebrewingco.com/
.
Colonial Williamsburg makes for a nice day-visit (Website:
http://www.colonialwilliamsburg.com/
). Here's a website for other Williamsburg information:
http://gowilliamsburg.com/
. We always stayed at the Residence Inn by Marriott (Website:
http://www.marriott.com/residence-inn/travel.mi
) in Williamsburg. The Williamsburg AleWerks serves good food and drink (Website:
http://www.williamsburgalewerks.com/
).
Also in the area is the Yorktown Battlefield (Website:
http://www.battleofyorktown.com/
and
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Yorktown
) site.
The 400 year old town of Jamestown is also close to Newport News (Website:
http://historyisfun.org/
) . It's about 25 miles from Newport News to these three (Yorktown, Jamestown, and Williamsburg) places.
My students also enjoyed visiting the Busch Gardens Amusment Park (Website:
http://seaworldparks.com/en/buschgardens-williamsburg
), which is fun to visit on a hot summer day.
